Weezer Takes it "Bach" to Basics with New Album - "Ok Human" Review

Written by David Tauscher

Weezer has returned and is more orchestral than ever! They've just dropped their 14th album, titled “Ok Human”, the first of two anticipated releases from the rock veterans this year, in addition to "Van Weezer."

What makes this album special is the emphasis on orchestral instrumentation rather than Weezer’s usual implementation of heavy guitar riffs. The record, while stripped back, is is exceptional, and perfect for winter weather; it highlights how well this band does with experimentation.

The album opens with “All My Favorite Songs”, setting the stage for what is to come. Violins and backing vocals help usher in frontman Rivers Cuomo as his lyrics reflect on how he is drawn to melancholy things and wishes he could change.

Even with the addition of the orchestral instruments, this is still very much a Weezer album. Themes of isolation and family all ring throughout this album, especially in the vulnerable “Playing My Piano” which fades into “My Mirror Image.”

With a band with such a large, iconic discography, it's easy to prefer old material over new records. While fans may debate and argue about place that "Ok Human" has in the band's catalog, I feel that in time it could be looked back on just as highly as its predecessor “The Blue Album”.

"Ok Human" is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can support Weezer by picking up some merch and following them on Twitter @Weezer. Be sure to let us know what you thought of the album by tweeting us @lgndsoftmrw!
