Wave Break Plays “Tug of War” in New Single - Review

Written by Nicole Guzman

After gaining traction from Idobi Radio and New Noise Magazine for their debut EP “Armory”, Wave Break returns with a brand new project set to release this fall.

Anticipating their next EP, the one-woman rock band released a single titled “Tug of War” on September 10th. This track is the band’s new approach to an alternative rock sound that you will hear Wave Break fully embrace.

“Tug of War” confronts the feelings of being overstepped in a relationship. Frontwoman Kelly Barber provides passionate lyrics accompanied by her melodic vocals to paint a picture of a situation where she feels pushed around and invaded.

Lyrically, the verses highlight Barber's feelings of exhaustion with the way she's treated. She sings about becoming weak from carrying "extra weight" to keep her limits known to the other person.

However, the chorus turns to confrontation as the lyrics uncover the overstepping of boundaries. Barber sings, "You're not entitled to all of my time / You're not entitled to all of my space", further identifying her frustration.

"Tug of War", features an outstanding instrumental to accompany Barber's vocal and lyrical talent. Between the drums and guitar, everything is loud and in your face but never overpowers any other aspect of the track.

It's the perfect alternative-rock feel and amplifies the angst of Wave Break's intended tone for the song.

Emotionally, Wave Break created a capturing track for listeners to resonate with the classic angst of a typical alternative-rock song while making it original to their modern sound.

"Tug of War" is a track with stand-out features that will keep listeners coming back for more. Whether it's Barber's lyrical talent or the punchy instrumentals, there's bound to be some way listeners will fall in love with this release.

"Tug of War" is out now everywhere you listen to music. You can keep up with Wave Break on Twitter @wavebreakband or pick up a copy of their previous EP via their merch store!
