After its premiere on the band's "Anti-Tour" livestream concert, Waterparks has dropped their newest song titled “Numb.” This is the third single from their upcoming album “Greatest Hits” set to be released on May 21st, 2021.
This new track is proof that this album will cease to align with stereotypical genre rules. It’s full of electronic beats, yet it still has that Waterparks magic we’ve all come to love.
The pre-chorus is full of callbacks to their last two albums; the line “Hello to the FANDOM / Please don’t have a TANTRUM” references the band's last album “FANDOM” that openly addressed toxic fan culture and fan-favorite track "TANTRUM" from their sophomore LP titled "Entertainment." “Numb” has a lot of those same themes as 2019's "FANDOM", addressing opinions and misconceptions from listeners.
In the chorus, frontman Awsten Knight explains, “The more I wrap myself up / The more I’m coming undone.” It's evident that the more he’s involved with the public and social media side of the band, the worse his mental health gets.
In 2020, Knight took a break from social media but not before tweeting about how the media negatively impacts himself and the creative process. He stated, “Social media just hurts creativity and art and that’s the truth”, an opinion shared by many, especially artists and those involved in the music industry.
The end of the song is highly reminiscent of the end of the lead single from "FANDOM", titled “Turbulent.” However, while the final moments of “Turbulent” went full speed ahead like the song title suggests, “Numb” slows down all the electricity as if it goes “numb”, once again aligning with its title.
Overall, this is the perfect song to really get yourself moving. Waterparks has also released a music video that’s colorful and fast paced to match the energy of the track.
“Numb” is available now anywhere you stream music; you can support the band by picking up some merch, including pre-orders for the new album "Greatest Hits" due out on May 21st and apparel from the band's aforementioned "Anti-Tour" livestream show.
