Wasted Space Releases Gripping New EP- “exsanguination” Review

Written by Nicole Guzman

Coming back with a fresh new release after over a year, the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based four-piece returns with their new EP, “exsanguination”. Consisting of vocalist and bassist Mikey Montoni, guitarist Meg Mcnerney, guitarist Christian Ryder, and drummer Jane Herring, Wasted Space brings forth an EP that does not disappoint.

With a rich alternative rock meets pop-punk sound, the self-proclaimed 90's worshipping punk band creates an EP that is youthful, authentic, and some of their best work yet. Without hesitation, the band's intentions to mix two pre-existing genres into their own sound shine through immediately while piecing together contributions from all four members.

Opening the EP is "i would never barf in yr urn, brenda!", with this Wasted Space carries listeners through feelings of regret and exasperation alongside gritty and powerful vocals from front-person Mikey Montoni. All the musical contributions from the guitars and drums build an energetic and intense base for this track.

Though the shortest of the three songs, listeners can expect to be thoroughly impressed with how much this track embodies everything Wasted Space aims for.

The second track, "gutterface", guides listeners through a lyrically similar melancholy experience. A steady percussion from Herring and multiple guitars unite to create a striking but subdued tone for Montoni to deliver passionate vocals. It comes to a slow for a soft guitar solo that leads the track into a mellow finish.

"jeff, yr friend who cares." closes off the EP. Appearing slightly slower paced at first, do not be quick to dismiss this track upon first impression.

In this track every member gets to flourish in a way where they all combine effortlessly. The band comes together to combine and showcase all their talents into a stand-out closing song.

Overall, in just three songs, Wasted Space impresses vocally, lyrically, and sonically. This EP is something that is sure to get listeners going and wanting more.
