This Summer Open Up About Their Past On New Single “The Rabbit Hole”- Review

Written by Daniela Ruíz

This Summer, the emo group from Cleveland, Ohio has released their new single “The Rabbit Hole”. It´s their second this year, and the first leading up to their next big project.

The group has been furthering away from their initial, more hard-rock style since the release from their self-titled EP last year, which had an more angsty sound, keener to early 2010’s pop-punk.

Since the start, “The Rabbit Hole” presents itself in a whole new form compared to their past works, with dark riffs reminiscent of a midwest-emo track before bringing the whole band. With the riff still on the back, they jump in led by singer Justin Coleman. “Shallow holes, up to your ankles with alcohol as you memories fall out of your hollow skull” is what introduces us to the bigger picture of the track, perfectly accompanying the tone set by the guitar.

The song is about the difficulties of coping with a dark past, how it crawls up under your skin and overtakes you and yet, you have to go on even while drowning in yourself. The lyrics accompanied by the vocal performance, completely transmit every little detail to the listener.

Shifting between soft and slow lines on the verses and intense screaming on the chorus set it alive, and the band really let Coleman have at it. With distorted guitars and heavy drums that help completely turn the track around from one moment to the other, making the listener immersed in a shifting range of emotions, perfect for what the bands aiming for with their new sound.

In just a year, This Summer have been capable of constantly evolving their style, and “The Rabbit Hole” feels like an enormous strike in that direction towards the band finding their unique sound.
