Welcome back, Bearings! On September 7th, the Canadian pop-punk band dropped their latest single “Sway," along with the announcement of their upcoming album "Hello, It’s You", which will be dropping November 20th, 2020, on Pure Noise Records. The single is the third song we've heard from this record so far, following “So Damn Wrong” and “I Feel It All,” which were released back in September 2019.
The song kicks off with an upbeat instrumental, in which frontman Dougie Cousins starts off merely saying, “Context: She’s on my mind.” He then proceeds to talk about how he’s trying to say the words that this girl wants to hear; however, it’s not working out.
Cousins wants to find the words to say, but they only have such a short amount of time. “Sway / You’re swimming in my veins, around your room / It’s not the same without you, to something blue,” communicates that things have changed, and though he cares about this girl, it seems as if she’s gone, with her memory still lingering on around him.
He’s stuck remembering all the memories they’ve shared and these thoughts about her, making them sad. “We’re always taking something and turn it into nothing,” is the statement being made by Cousins.
This is possibly a reflection on being in a relationship with someone and having uncertainty or lack of communication tear it down. This point becomes more apparent in the second verse, “You don’t talk about your thoughts now / So your mind is mine to read.”
He says, “I lost track of time” at the end of the verse, implying that this relationship came to an end without the true feelings being put out in the open. Overall, “Sway” is a fantastic song and helps set the tone for what to expect from "Hello, It’s You."
It feels like a song that can be expected to receive tons of energy, once shows return and it is safe to gather and jump around in the pit. Until then, it is totally acceptable to stream this song and jump around your room in preparation.
Preorders for "Hello, It's You" are available right now on Bearings' website, including merch and vinyl bundles. A music video for "Sway" has also been released on Pure Noise's YouTube page.
