Doncaster-born artist Yungblud, born Dominic Harrison, has been teasing his latest single for weeks and on Friday, July 16, it finally dropped. After his first single from his upcoming untitled sophomore album dropped, it was unclear as to what direction his new single would go. However once the single art dropped, his spiked hair told us all that we needed to know. In short: it would rock.
The single, “Strawberry Lipstick”, was clearly inspired by the British punk movement, from his red, gel-spiked hair to the Union Jack dress. The song begins with feedback from a microphone before Harrison yells that “this is a song about a person I love.” Immediately, the guitar, drums, and bass kick in with “hey”’s shouted to give the track a kickstart.
The first verse is about Harrison’s need to rebel. He calls himself a “reasonably fucked up individual” and talks about his lack of self control, going on to say that he’ll break through the barriers put in front of him. Harrison has said that this album will be exploring sexuality, showing up in this song with the line “they’re gonna lock me in the closet, but I’m coming out.”
The chorus is perfectly head-bangable, repeating the phrase “take it easy”. It’s safe to say that when live shows come back, this song will drive the crowd insane.
Moving on to the second verse, he starts talking about love, lust, and infatuation. Harrison sings the title of the song, saying “she’s gonna suck on my strawberry lipstick, she’s gonna taste my body with her fingertips.” It’s one of Yungblud’s most mature songs to date.
Fans of the rock n roll spirit will love the direction that Yungblud is going in with this song.
