"Somewhere Nowhere"- Hundredth Review

Written by: David Tauscher

Melodic hardcore band turned ambient indie rock group Hundredth are coming back full force in 2020 with a new single as well as a new album dropping next month. The newest track, titled “Somewhere Nowhere”, shares the same name as the album due out October 9th.

If you haven’t heard Hundredth’s new material since 2015, you’re in for a surprise. The band completely changed their sound from crushing hardcore to synth riddled ambient shoegaze pop.

“Somewhere Nowhere” starts off with soothing keys and a chopped drum beat as frontman  Chadwick Johnson comes in with his echo-y vocals. Underneath the drums and vocal effects are piano chords that help fill out the song.

This track has a very ethereal/heavenly quality to it. I lend that to the synths, vocal effects, and Chadwick's cadence as he sings, “Go somewhere, it’s nowhere”.

This track is perfect as an opener setting the stage for what’s to come. If this song is a preview of what’s to come on this album then I am very excited.

Despite my last statement, I felt this track was really good but not great. I was thrown off a bit by the drums and their odd time signature.

The vocals are nice but I like when Chadwick's vocals aren’t hiding behind a wall of thick effects. Again, I am very excited for what the rest of this album will have to offer as I feel in love with Hundredth’s new sound introduced on their last album “RARE”, but this track for me just left a bit more to be desired.

"Somewhere Nowhere" is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can preorder the upcoming record of the same name on the band's website along with bundles including vinyl, shirts, hoodies, and more.
