Boston-based band shallow pools has had a busy year so far. They've released three singles prior to their latest, "it's alright", and are releasing their second EP, titled “headspace”, on June 4th.
Some listeners of the band will be happy to see themselves in the members; the band consists of singer Glynnis Brennan, guitarist Jess Gromada, bassist Haley Senft, and drummer Ali Ajemian. Each member describes themselves as queer and aims to provide a safe, inclusive space for listeners of their music.
The song begins with a spacy synth before going right into the first verse. The opening lines, “Tried to fight it / Couldn’t hide it / Out of focus / Daydreaming” lure you into the start of a love song, the track quickly presenting itself as a fresh take on such familiar subject matter.
The chorus of “it’s alright” absolutely shines, as the words “Feeling something I just can’t deny / And it’s alright / Every time I try to close my eyes / You’re on my mind” echo atop layers of synths, guitars, and punchy drums. The chorus embodies everything that songwriters should aspire to create with memorable lyrics that are complemented by the depth of the instrumental and backing vocals.
The bridge of the song can best be described as the indie-pop version of a breakdown. The second chorus fades out into a bass-driven instrumental break, followed by a mini drum breakdown before the final chorus roars back in.
To me, the vocals stand out the most on this track. Vocalist Glynnis Brennan’s delivery is possibly the best I’ve heard in the genre; her vocal melodies bolster an already strong production and really drive the song.
Though shallow pools are more of an underground band right now, I don't foresee that being the case for long. Both this track and their others are too catchy and polished to not take the world by storm. Everything about the track was impressive and I see a very bright future ahead for the quartet.
