Hailing from Cape Cod, MA, indie duo Ron’s Car’s newest single, “3 am,” is a delightful song tackling a serious subject. Looking at the topic of late-night anxiety, Ron’s Car uses folk, alternative, and Latin influences to transport the listener to their bed at three o'clock in the morning.
Matthew Michaud’s airy vocals permeate through the acoustic guitar chords of Nathan Richer, strumming to an almost Latin beat in the verses. Michaud’s lyrics really hit home in the chorus, asking the “voices in [his] head to just shut up.”
Fans of philosophy will understand the Nietzsche references in the second verse, and the second pre-chorus delivery of “I can’t wake up like this no more,” adds a wonderful sense of both urgency and rest before the powerful chorus. Even more impactful than Michaud’s lyrics is the accompanying music video for the track, as Michaud and Richer essentially dig their own graves on a Cape Cod beach, a perfect visual representation of the song, as dark as that may be.
The most impactful part of “3 am” is the coda. After the higher energy second chorus, the song goes the way of Eric Clapton’s “Layla,” offering a glimpse of death with the first lyric, “barbed wire on the pearly gates” before the symbolic buzzing of the morning alarm, signifying Michaud’s return to sleep.
Ron’s Car’s newest single, “3 am,” is a wonderful follow-up to their first single, “Better For Me,” released in early January. For fans of Neitzsche, profound lyrics, and philosophy, this track ticks all the boxes of an effective song, being wonderfully sung, beautifully written, and played with abandon.
