Ron’s Car Releases Energetic, Impactful Debut Single - “Better For Me” Review

Written by Jennifer Moglia

The new year has officially started, and new music is already back in full force. Boston, Massachusetts alternative rock band Ron’s Car has released their first-ever single.

Titled “Better For Me”, this is a three-minute-long exploration of the intense issues caused by the narrator’s lack of sleep. The lyrics are deeply personal and paint a vivid picture of the situation at hand, along with a dynamic, constantly moving and changing instrumental.

This track starts out slow, with quiet, flowy vocals, proclaiming a harsh truth, “I’m afraid of what I’ll do if this gets any worse.” The vocalist then moves into more rap/hip-hop or “nu-metal” style vocals ahead of the first chorus, reminiscent of bands like Linkin Park.

The chorus is big and booming sonically, while phrases like “Eyes on fire / I’m just shy of a life worth living through at all” do a great job of conveying the struggles that the narrator is going through. More of the same follows in the second verse, with softer vocals delivering statements that pack a punch returning.

The lyric, “How can I be me if I need you to stay alive?” is probably my favorite line in the whole song, because of how versatile it is. While the phrase placed in this song particularly probably refers to sleeping pills or medication of some sort, it could be applied to a variety of situations and is undoubtedly a feeling that many have felt before, whether it be about a relationship, coping mechanism, or anything else of the sort.

A powerful bridge of sorts precedes the final chorus, with the singer repeating, “I can’t go on like this”, driving home the severity of the frustration expressed in the rest of the track. The song ends after one more swinging refrain, but you’ll want to play it over and over again (trust us, we did).

Overall, this is an amazing track, especially for a first single from a brand-new band. If a fun alternative/pop-punk sound with lyrics that make you think and feel more than you’d like to is something you’d be interested in, then this song is for you.
