Interview by Julia Kender
Lucy Spraggan released her sixth album, “Choices” on February 26th. We were lucky enough to get to (virtually) talk with Spraggan about the album, road trips, and her influence on the LGBTQ+ community!
“Choices” is coming out in late February! How do you feel about the release coming up?
Lucy Spraggan: It’s scary to release something so personal but I'm so ready. I just want to know what people think of it!
What was the inspiration for “Choices” album art?
LS: The artwork has little clues about each song in it. I wrote a lot of it whilst in America and I wanted the cover to look like how I wanted the album to sound. I love it. There's so much detail to it.
How did you choose “Choices” to be the title?
LS: I wanted something to represent what the album is all about - it's written about all the choices I've made in the last couple of years. There's been a lot; getting sober, getting divorced, changing my lifestyle so much.
What keeps you motivated to write during hard times?
LS: I'm lucky in the sense that writing has always come quite naturally. I write about my experiences so I was able to transcribe this last year quite easily into music.
Who did you look to for inspiration on “Choices”?
LS: I had so many musical influences. I listen to a lot of Bollywood music that had an influence on "Animal." I looked all around me for inspiration in terms of lyrics, [it] comes from everywhere.
What song means the most to you off of “Choices”?
LS: Possibly "Choices (don't be afraid)." The message of the song is to always be yourself, to accept who you are. It took me a long time to learn that.
What does it feel like to be someone who inspires younger people in the LGBTQ+ community?
LS: It's an honor. I really hope that by being out and comfortable in my own skin it might help at least one other person do the same. It's a real privilege to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
I get major road trip vibes from your new album, what’s your go-to road trip album to listen to?
LS: YES! I love that you do. That's what I wanted it to be. Mine would be The Beach Boys' Greatest Hits.
What’s been your song of 2021 so far?
LS: "Dinero" by Jennifer Lopez. I bloody love her.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions for me! Is there anything you want to say to anyone currently reading this?
LS: Thank you to anyone who has offered any kind of support whether it’s been a comment, share, download, or album purchase. You make all the difference, thank you!
