With a title and musicality perfect for the upcoming winter season, producer Gabby Relos (Rippedvans) and singer Sam Pollet have released a new single. “Thin Ice”, which dropped on New Year’s Day, is the perfect way to kick off your 2021.
While sonically this is a departure from Pollet’s typical singer-songwriter/acoustic tracks, this instrumental from Rippedvans complements her voice perfectly. The song opens with the lyrics, “How am I feeling? / I don’t really know / Checking in with myself / No one’s ever home”, conveying feelings of uncertainty in a clever way that softens the blow a bit.
The percussion picks up as the verse continues before Pollet sings in the chorus, “I feel us tripping / Shoelaces are untied.” Her delivery is soft, but powerful and to-the-point, getting her message across perfectly.
My favorite lyric here is probably “it isn’t nothing if it keeps you up at night”, something that many of us have probably had to tell ourselves at one time or another. This song is full of little catchy, buzzwordy phrases like that, sure to keep the tune stuck in your head for the entirety of winter.
After one final chorus and the added line “This sinking feeling / Buried on my left side / Keeps me up at night”, the track fades out, its emotional lyrics and smooth instrumental leaving you feeling warmed up and freezing all at once. If you haven’t checked out either of these artists before, this song is a perfect place to start.
