After Harry Styles left One Direction behind, he continued to climb the charts and make history. His sophomore album, “Fine Line”, released one year ago this week, saw major success, broke boundaries, and stirred up inspiration.
Starting off the album is my personal favorite track on the record, “Golden,” which became a single and was accompanied by a music video after the album's release. This upbeat and super fun track is about convincing the person you love just how bright they truly shine.
Next up is “Watermelon Sugar.” This single climbed the charts and would rightfully end up being one of Styles’ most recognizable songs; a music video was shot for it as well!
The next single of the album is “Adore You” with a music video that takes you on a trip to the fictional island of Eroda and the song itself takes you on a trip to Styles’ view of his lover. His lyrics show wanting a deep emotional connection.
“Lights Up” was the first single off of “Fine Line” and gave fans a big look into what was in store for the new album. You can relive the whole beginning of this era by watching the music video.
Changing up the mood a bit is “Cherry” a track that goes over romantic grief and heartbreak. The lyrics “I can tell that you are at your best / I’m selfish so I’m hating it” tell the story of being aware that the other person in your relationship has moved on but your love for them is still too strong for you to be happy for them, so your jealous side comes out instead.
Then, bringing down the mood even more is “Falling.” This song is another one of my favorites that brought tears to my eyes on the first listen. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful songs you’ll ever listen to, not to mention the music video! How could you not be in your feelings over it?
With the intro lyrics “Don’t blame me for falling” the album transitions perfectly into “To Be So Lonely.” Another personal favorite, this song shows Styles’ jealous and broken side while also keeping up the carefree facade.
Next up is “She”, which takes a turn for the sultry mood. Styles goes into the track explaining how his ideal woman is all an idea in his head who’s confined to his daydreams.
“Sunflower, Vol. 6” is a song I can’t help but smile when I hear. Walking the listener through Styles falling in love with a new stranger, the way this song is mixed is an auditory experience everyone needs to listen to.
“Canyon Moon” was not a favorite of mine at first, but eventually grew on me. It’s the “feel good” track and makes you want to take a road trip with your significant other.
It goes over Styles’ deep love and optimism for the future. The lyric “I’ve been gone too long from you” shows how you can be gone from someone for a short amount of time, but it feels like years.
“Treat People With Kindness” is the track that revolves all around the famous Harry Styles motto. This song is nothing like what I thought it would be, but was a pleasant surprise.
Appropriately finishing out the album is the title track “Fine Line.” This track repeatedly gives us the reminder that “we’ll be alright.”
While beautiful, this ending song is on the pessimistic side lyrically. Trying to convince himself this “fine line” between friendship and lovers will work, while knowing that it won’t.
One year later and “Fine Line” is still one of my favorite albums of all time. It was a big step for Harry Styles and he continues to thrive this year. The tour supporting the album was postponed until (hopefully) next year but until then you can pick up some merch and keep up on Twitter @HarryStyles.
