Regrown Tells us The Past Can’t Be Won With New Single - “Cuffed” Review

Written by Nicole Guzman

On Friday, March 12th, Regrown released their single “Cuffed” in anticipation of their debut EP “Closed Casket Material”, expected on June 18th, 2021. The emo/pop-punk band has six songs lined up for their upcoming project, all focused on the joys and anxieties of growing up.

The New Jersey-based band consists of dual vocalists/guitarists Ben Greenblatt and Kyle Lloyd, bassist Chris Panto, and drummer Nick Gelone. They came together as a band in 2017 and have since been working up to the release of their debut EP.

“Cuffed” talks about the experience of being in a relationship while being in a bad place mentally. It highlights feeling like you're being held back and ultimately growing from the mistakes that you and your partner once made.

In the first verse and chorus, the lyrical content surrounds burdens felt throughout the relationship, emphasized in the lines “Nothing to lose / No will to fight” and “To carry around my restraints then burst them out.” We then begin to hear about how they try to make things better in the second verse; “And I thought that I would make this easier on you / By leaving you alone / Look where that got me.”

Greenblatt’s lyrics capture the true essence of the situation, but this track is incredibly sonically strong as well. Between the vocals and instrumentals, Regrown builds an energetic pop-punk sound.

The drumming provided by Gelone are vital to this song, while the guitar riffs make it the complete package. Nothing clashes and nothing distracts the listener from understanding exactly what Regrown wants them to hear.

"Cuffed" is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can support Regrown by following them on Twitter @RegrownNJ and picking up some merch including shirts, flags, hoodies, and vinyl/CD pre-orders for their new EP (due out on June 18th) via MerchNow.
