Reigning from Hamilton, Ontario, the emo/post-hardcore band Rarity has released their live-in-studio version of “Tiger Lily.” This song was the closing track of their second full-length album “The Longest Lonesome” which was released back in 2019.
This video opens up with vocalist Loeden Learn simply entering the studio, sitting at the piano, and letting everything out. The room he’s playing in really allows him to show off the depth of his voice.
On this version, you can hear every note in the piano ring out, along with the acoustics of his voice encompassing the space. As the chorus approaches, you can really feel the pain and emotion pouring out of Learn through his facial expressions.
With the video just being close up shots of Learn playing the song, it lets listeners isolate the lyrics from the melody. Normally, those are two elements you want to hear together, but in this case, it feels like listening to two separate songs, in a good way.
The lyrics and piano are both strong forces working in tandem on this track, starting out sounding a little disconnected. When things come together in the chorus, it forms such a beautiful, somber combination.
Learn’s voice is raspy and full of raw emotion at the end of the second verse, with the lyrics “Confess me / I'll reject it / And I'll fail you.” Halfway through the video, we get a glimpse of the rest of the band in the recording studio, reminding fans that they're all still around.
The video ends with Learn playing a few keys and having the song feel like it didn’t really end. After watching this video in full, you don’t yearn for some big finish. It’s a peaceful ending, one where you’re comfortable sitting in silence for a few moments.
Although touring is not in the cards for Rarity at this time, you can always stream their discography and they do have a great merch store in which you can buy something and support the band. You can find them on Twitter @RarityBand and you can find us on Twitter @lgndsoftmrw!
