Inspired by the likes of Silverstein and Kanye West, Pulses’ “Bold New Taste” is all about the band going in a bold new direction in terms of their music and image. The single is an anthem about finding yourself and breaking free from the expectations of others.
Caleb Taylor, guitarist and vocalist for the band, summarized the meaning of the song best, calling it a track about “that mental struggle to forge your own unique identity that others either don’t recognize or don’t want to let you have.” “Bold New Taste” certainly succeeds in forging that new path for Pulses.
The band also shows musical growth, this song serving as their return after releasing their last album “Speak it Into Existence” in 2020. They also, with this latest single, show a possible genre transition from post-hardcore to a more metalcore sound while still holding unique elements like Taylor’s raps towards the end of the song.
While the song definitely holds up on its own, I personally would recommend giving it yourself a listen when it’s paired with the black and white music video. The fuzzy screens and black-and-white filters help to create an immersive atmosphere and enhance the listening experience for sure.
You can stream “Bold New Taste” everywhere you listen to music, and you can support the band by picking up merch via Bandcamp, PartlyCloudy, and the band's site, including pre-orders of their new album "Speak Less" due out on February 26th, and following them on Twitter @PulsesVA!
