Pollyanna is a band that has been on our radar for a little while now, and earlier this year, they seriously impressed us with the release of their single “Don’t Stay, Don’t Go.” Upon hearing that single, we quickly became excited to hear what the rest of their new EP, “Sugar Coat,” had in store!
The aforementioned single “Don’t Stay, Don’t Go” opens up this EP, kicking things off with its hard-hitting intro before the instrumentals step aside during the first verse, allowing the vocals to steal the spotlight. It’s not long before those instrumentals return to gradually build the song up to its unforgettable chorus, making it feel brand-new despite a late-October release.
“I Promise I’m Lying” follows suit, immediately bringing catchy guitar riffs and drumbeats during its intro and verses. The vocals take the reigns once the first verse begins, drawing the listener in and preparing for the irresistible chorus that follows, before a masterfully built bridge.
“IDKY”, which features Bloxx’s Ophelia Booth, slows things down a bit, opening up with some softer vocals and instrumentals. The drums kick in making the rhythm a bit more upbeat, and more instruments gradually get added in as the song continues on, transforming this into an emotional, harder-hitting ballad once the bridge begins.
The second half of the EP begins with “Good For You,” which contains gripping vocal and instrumental performances. The shouted vocals that are incorporated here and there throughout the song showcase the punk and rock influences in the band’s sound, especially during the track’s catchy chorus.
Second to last is “Grown Apart,” which also begins on a softer note before the drums and bass build it up to the huge chorus, and from that point forward, it becomes a harder-hitting song. The acoustically driven “Never Know” wraps things up, and while it’s definitely a much simpler track, it’s still pretty worth coming back to.
It's safe to say that Pollyanna has blown us away all over again with “Sugar Coat!” This EP contains some very memorable melodies and instrumentals, making it a well-crafted EP from the band overall.
