The sting of heartbreak isn’t easy to forget or move past, especially if it’s your first, but it's somewhat universally relatable. So many artists have taken their heartbreaks and turned them into something wonderful, the latest of which is Olivia Rodrigo.
You may recognize her for her role as Nini on the Disney+ original show "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series", as well as the song she wrote for the series, "All I Want." Her latest release, “Drivers License”, flew to number one on the iTunes and Apple Music charts just two days after it was released.
Whether you’re going through your first heartbreak, your tenth, or you’ve never experienced one at all, the true power of this song lies in its ability to evoke emotion in almost anyone who listens. A brief scroll through the hashtags on social media proves just how relatable and raw it is.
Lyrics like “I just can’t imagine / How you could be so okay now that I’m gone” combined with Rodrigo’s ferocious vocals brought me to tears by the end of the first chorus. Rodrigo sings of future plans that never came, the boy who moved on, and the girl that came between them, and it’s impossible to miss the emotion in her voice and how much pain this caused her.
In addition to this song immediately hitting number one on the charts, as I scrolled through TikTok and Twitter I couldn’t help but notice people comparing Rodrigo to Taylor Swift, certainly a warranted comparison. This single has earned a spot on playlists alongside fan-favorites of Swift’s like “All Too Well” and “Back To December”.
If you’ve ever felt the need to drive through the suburbs and just cry, this is the song to add to your soundtrack. "Drivers License" is available to stream wherever you listen to music.
