Mourning Collective Takes Listeners on a Journey Through the Seasons - "Autumn" Review

Written by Bethany Clancy

New shoegaze artist Mourning Collective, hailing from Massachusetts, has released a two-song EP, titled “Autumn.” The mastermind behind this project is Blake Turner, who describes Mourning Collective as a “one-man fuzzy, shoegaze-adjacent rock band.”

Turner has been releasing short EPs on a seasonal basis since spring of this year. In a lyrical sense, the title track reminds me of a Bright Eyes song with a sound resembling Balance & Composure mixed with early Citizen and Lemuria.

With lyrics like “I’m drifting through autumn / I’ll never make it through autumn / I’m still here,” shows how Turner’s emotions resemble that of a rollercoaster during a season that can be difficult to take on.

The second track, “Hello,” focuses on the theme of escapism, moving around physically and mentally until you finally get it right. The line, “The old mistakes / Just a new state / Just play it safe until the next one” definitely reinforces that.

The music video for “Autumn,” which was released a few days prior to the EP, consists of beautiful film shots of a red balloon flying through the air, aesthetically pleasing scenes of Turner walking through the forest, ghosts, and more. The balloon is a constant in the video, which gives the viewer a sense of peace and calmness.

Despite this EP just being released, Turner is already has songs for his winter release in the works. We can't wait to see what's next for him!

"Autumn" is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can follow Mourning Collective on Twitter @MourningCo. If you gave this EP a listen and want to let us know what you think, feel free to do so by tweeting us @lgndsoftmrw!
