With colder weather and the holiday season on the horizon, Mourning Collective has released the fourth and final installation of their seasonal releases, titled “Winter.” Much different from “Autumn,” this EP has more of a heavier and fast-paced tempo, while still containing elements of shoegaze.
Their last EP included songs resembling bands like Balance & Composite and Bright Eyes, whereas this EP is more like Turnover's “Magnolia.” The EP starts off with “Love,” a song about fearing love but eventually feeling comfortable and letting it in.
In the final stretch of the song, the vocalist sings, “Sometimes it feels like / No love could save us / You hear it / You feel it / No truth to wake us / I fear it but I breathe it in.” Feeling comfortable about falling in love, letting it in again, especially in the midst of a pandemic is such a bizarre feeling, and this track captures it perfectly.
The second track on the EP is “Glue”, which begins with a disoriented guitar riff, much different from the calming sounds of "Autumn." The last line, “So petrify me / Before I come unglued / From you,” brings out the idea that you can only change someone so much before they start to distance themselves.
The third song, “Torches,” starts off slow with a heavy build-up to the chorus. This is probably my favorite song on the EP, and lines like, “Feel the weight of collapsing / Just like we were warned / But we chose to ignore” and “I won’t bother / Push me under again” show how much pain and emotion the speaker is feeling.
We close out this final chapter of seasonal EPs with the title track, “Winter”, in which a slew of emotions is packed into three minutes. Most of these songs, although they do have a calming sound to them, are heavily structured based on feeling lost, too much emotion, and sometimes no emotion at all.
“Winter” is available to stream wherever you listen to music, along with the rest of Mourning Collective's "Seasons" series of EPs, including "Autumn", "Spring", and "Summer."
