Luke Hemmings Proves Time Is Of The Essence With New Single "Motion"- Review

Written by Hannah Clough

Many fans were taken by surprise when the lead singer of the Australian pop-group 5 Seconds of Summer, Luke Hemmings announced he was releasing his very own album. “When Facing the Things We Turn Away From” drops August 13, 2021 via Sony Music Entertainment and it is already at the top of some "album of the year" lists.

Like fellow bandmate Ashton Irwin’s solo-album “Superbloom”, this was Hemmings’ way of channeling creative energy amidst the pandemic. The first single “Starting Line” took the world by storm and set high hopes for the rest of the release.

"Motion" is far from disappointing with its keyboard heavy vibe. It’s on the opposite end of the spectrum sonically in comparison to “Starting Line”, but that’s what makes the track unique. Fans of Hemmings know 5 Seconds of Summer as a group who’s always improving their sound so to hear a track like this come from just himself is refreshing.

“Motion” tackles an internal struggle with time, whether it’s having too much time or not enough is left up to the interpretation of the listener. Between "Motion" and his previous track "Starting Line", time seems to be a common theme. With the pandemic it seems a lot of us had time to rediscover ourselves as it seems Hemmings did with these efforts.

You can support Luke Hemmings by picking up some “When Facing the Things We Turn Away From” inspired merch from his official store and pre-saving the album on your preferred streaming platform!
