Lilac Queen made a powerful and promising debut with the release of their “If Only” EP just about a year ago, in the spring of 2020. Now, in the spring of 2021, the Massachusetts-based shoegaze quintet has returned with some more new material, a double single release titled “things are different now.”
The first of these two songs is “fences,” which starts out with softer guitars before the bass and drums kick in to create a harder-hitting intro. The vocals take the reigns during the verses, delivering melodies as catchy as the instrumentals accompanying them.
These verses seamlessly transition into the huge chorus, where vocalist Lily St. Germain puts on an emotive performance. The bridge, much like the beginning of the song, is also much softer instrumentally, which really allows the vocals the raw emotion found within the overall vocal performance to stand out before the hard-hitting instrumentals return to drive the song’s anthemic ending.
The second track on this release, titled “piles,” begins similarly to its predecessor. The verses are much more laid-back, and the massive choruses contrast quite a bit, with melodic vocals that showcase the talent that both of the singers in this band have through the beautiful harmonies.
The screamed and shouted vocals are just as necessary, capturing the emotion within the song. After the return of this chorus, the bridge does the same, really shining a spotlight on the instrumentals for a little while before they fade out.
The two singles that collectively make up “things are different now” are both incredible tracks from Lilac Queen. If you haven’t checked them out before, now is the time; you’ll be eager to see what they do next!
