A few days before the release of their debut EP “Feels Like Home,” we were able to sit down with Annapolis, Maryland post-hardcore band Again In May’s frontman, Liam King. We discussed the band's start, debut EP, being a musician throughout a pandemic, and more!
Madison Boyce: To start things off, could you introduce yourself and your band?
Liam King: My name is Liam King and I’m in the band Again In May! I’d call us post-hardcore adjacent.
MB: What was the reason behind releasing “Waves” as your debut single?
LK: So, “Waves” was one I was really unsure about for a while. It’s actually the first song we wrote for the project.
That got written months ago compared to everything else that got written within a few months of actually going in and recording. It just came out like, maybe not the hardest hitting, but the most “you can drop your windows and throw it on and enjoy it pretty casually.” Like, that's the one my mom likes.
MB: How has it been releasing your debut material while in a pandemic? Has it negatively impacted you guys as a band or has it helped you?
LK: It’s kind of hard to tell because we’ve never released anything before, but it definitely puts a little less pressure on us because we don’t have to put it out and immediately start planning our release shows and trying to line up venues. It’s definitely given me more time to interact with people about it than I would have had, had the world been open. I’ve met a lot more people because of it.
MB: If you had to pick a favorite track off of your debut EP “Feels Like Home”, which would it be?
LK: “Losing Color!” I'm really excited for people to hear “Empty Room” too because that’s probably the fastest and most out of the norm one for me.
MB: Take me through your writing process for the EP - how did it all come to be?
LK: We started writing this around a year ago, or at least working on it, and went through so many songs before we started to land on ones we were comfortable with bringing to tracking. Because it is our first one, we really wanted to put our best out. There were a lot of revisions going on, all of these songs have gone through multiple trials and errors.
MB: Who inspired you to start playing music?
LK: I’ve been wanting to do it for as long as I can remember. It kind of just happened, with the band at least, kind of randomly.
They had an Instagram ad going around mid-2019 that I just happened to see one night when I was drinking. (laughs) I probably wouldn’t have clicked on it and replied if I was not in the best state of mind, but I’m glad I did because the guys are awesome.
When it comes to seeing it, making it, and actually going out and doing it, the guys in One Life To Lead from Baltimore - which is near where I’m from - are hugely inspiring. Just some local dudes making it happen and that absolutely is a big inspiration to me.
MB: Where do you hope Again In May is in five years?
LK: I hope we’re still together! (laughs) I hope at that point we have a collection of songs under our belt; hopefully we’ve gone on some tours, hopefully we’ve been able to play and grow. I just want people to listen, even if they don’t like it, let me know you don’t like it!
MB: If you could say anything to anyone reading this right now, what would it be?
LK: It’s going to be a couple of things! One, please go check [our EP] out! We’ve put so much time, money, and effort into this and we’re stoked about it.
We want other people to be stoked about it too. People who have heard it already have been generally positive so, even if you don’t believe me, believe them.
If shows are opening up, go out to your friends' shows. Buy their merchandise, do anything you can to support them, and that goes for anyone who creates, not just musicians - if you’ve got a friend who makes stickers or takes pictures, pay them to do those things for you! Support your friends doing stuff.
We want to thank Liam King of Again In May for taking the time to sit down and talk with us! You can support the band by following them on Twitter @AgainInMay along with streaming “Feels Like Home” available on all music platforms.
