A staple on the ska scene since 1996, Less Than Jake’s newest album “Silver Linings” keeps the instrumentation lively and the energy on par with the contemporaries of the scene. Coming from a newer ska-head who had never listened to these veterans before this album, “Silver Linings” is a romp of songs, each one working on the energy and lyrics of the last.
One of the standouts is the first song on the album, “The High Cost of Low Living.” Starting off with a great horn riff, you immediately know you’re in for a banger.
Nearly every college student should be able to relate to the lyrics “takin’ what I’m makin’, spend it on a Saturday night”, trying to get through the week and finally getting to the weekend. This song exemplifies that feeling in an upbeat, ska-punk anthem of late-teen/early 20’s angst.
Another highlight from the album is “Anytime and Anywhere,” a track about the feeling of making the next move to start a relationship. This song is quintessential ska, and with the bridge’s lyrics of “Take the time to realize / Stop and notice passing moments”, Less Than Jake has found a great way to convey the feelings of common cliches when it comes to relationships.
What’s great about “Silver Linings” is the instrumentation. While some ska can feel “muddied” by over-excessive instrumentation, this band has found a way to make it work.
Every instrument is heard equally and there’s no instrument that takes precedent over the other. This helps highlight every instrument, but especially elevates the usage of the horn section.
Despite being a newcomer to ska who has only really listened to Millington and Reel Big Fish, I can definitely see myself listening to more of Less Than Jake. This album sends a strong message, reminding listeners that this band hasn't lost their spark, no matter how long they've been making music.
