Kerri Watt transports listeners to another planet with “Neptune’s Daughter” - Review

Written by Hannah Clough

Scottish singer-songwriter Kerri Watt has released what could be one of our favorite

albums of 2021! It's a little early to know for sure, but this album transports

listeners to a different dimension.

“Neptune’s Daughter” hit streaming services on January 15th after being in the making since 2018. It definitely seems like all of the hard work is paying off, because this 18-track record is a rollercoaster of emotions.

On the opening track “All The Worse For Me”, Watt channels artists like Joan Jett with old-school classic rock vibes, enchanting listeners with her incredible vocal range. Unexpectedly, the second track “Kissing Fools” switches gears and resembles a cute love song you’d hear in an 80s movie with the light tambourine adding an extra kick instrumentally.

“Chasing Aeroplanes” is one of the most dynamic tracks on the record with its tale

of taking charge of your life and being proud of the progress you’ve made. The

lyrics “In the meantime I’ll chase aeroplanes and I wonder what it all means” show that it's okay to daydream and set huge goals even if you’re being told they’re unrealistic.

Another standout happens to be the title track “Neptune’s Daughter”, showing that Watt isn't a one-trick pony when it comes to genre and musical style. Its funky piano opening and soulful lyrics give an inspiring representation of the album as a whole.

Residing in the middle of the record is the unprecedented powerhouse ballad "Hellfire." Her

haunting vocals break down a relationship gone awry; if you want a heartbreaking revenge track, you’ve got one right here. “Spoonful of Sugar” picks the mood back up with a spoken word opening that flows smoothly into an upbeat classic pop chorus you'll love to sing along with.

If you’re a fan of Alanis Morrisette you’ll love “You Can’t Catch Me”, with the lyric “I got one hand in the pocket of my jeans” sealing the deal. The energy is unmatched throughout the track, making for a perfect driving to the beach, windows down with your best friends song.

The final track “I Wanna Sing For You” is full of agony and pain as Watt expresses the

sorrow one feels when they lose someone close to them. Her vocals are soothing throughout the record, but especially in this song. I could listen to her sing all day.

Although that was the last original song on the record, it's followed by six acoustic renditions of some of her previous songs. “Cut Me Loose Acoustic” highlights her raspy vocals while “Band Of Gold Acoustic” has some strong country influence.

Closing out the album is an acoustic rendering of “Jessie”, telling a strange tale about a girl of the night with an ending that you wouldn't expect. Aside from the story, this song is one of the strongest vocally, accompanied by a basic strumming pattern, allowing her voice to shine.

Despite this being a debut LP, "Neptune's Daughter" is an incredibly strong release. We could definitely see this pushing her towards more mainstream success in the United States, and we can't wait to see what big things she accomplishes in the future.

"Neptune's Daughter" is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can support the artist by picking up a shirt, cassette, or CD on her online store. You can follow Kerri Watt on Twitter @KerriWatt and keep up with us on Twitter @lgndsoftmrw!
