Toronto-based, AVIV is a rising star in the bedroom pop lo-fi music scene. After the release of singles, “Lonely Bitch” and “Frontlawn,” AVIV took a moment to speak to us about her rise into fame, inspirations, and what’s next for her as an artist!
Sydney Durst: How are you doing?
A: I’m doing really well! I mean, as well as one can be in these crazy times we live in. (laughs)
SD: How has the reception to “Lonely Bitch” been?
A: It’s been so positive and exciting. I would probably say this is the song I got the most feedback on from people I know.
I’m so happy how everything turned out. Lucky to have a great team behind me.
SD: You’re currently in school, has the fact that it is now all virtual had any effects on making music? If so, were they positive or negative?
A: I honestly used to get a little embarrassed at school when friends or teachers brought up my music. But slowly, I learned to be proud and I think that came to be when I started making music I love!
I’m really lucky to have a great and supportive group of friends by my side.
SD: You’ve stated that the inspiration for “Lonely Bitch” was the toxic relationship that you had with yourself. Since the song’s writing and release, how have you changed since then?
A: When I wrote “Lonely Bitch”, I was more fixated on creating relationships with other people, I didn’t focus on my relationship with myself. I’ve spent a lot of time and energy on fixing this.
Some tools that helped me were surrounding myself with supportive people, doing things I love, and stop chasing people who aren’t giving me that same energy back.
SD: Who or what inspires you musically?
A: Artists that inspire me include; Clairo, beabadoobee, and Men I Trust. I also would have to say Radiohead.
I remember driving in my dad's car when I was younger and listening to “No Surprises” and thinking "that’s different." (laughs)
I loved the way it differed from anything I had ever heard before. Since then I’ve made it my goal to create unique and new sounds that I love.
SD: I’ve seen that you’ve recently done some virtual performances through Twitch! How has that been?
A: SO cool! I really miss live shows and performing live so it’s really a treat that there is a way to connect and perform live to people who are interested.
SD: What made you decide to start a career in music at such a young age?
A: I took piano lessons growing up and HATED them. Then as time progressed I turned to music as a form of therapy and slowly, slowly fell in love with music, piano, and expressing my feelings through song. I’d write songs every day and then decided I wanted to put them out into the world.
SD: What was the creative process behind the visualizer for “Frontlawn"?
A: While writing “Frontlawn”, I envisioned the video in my head. I tried to convey a feeling of freedom and nostalgia. When the video production began, I tried to distribute these emotions visually as well.
SD: What is it that drew you to the lo-fi bedroom pop genre as opposed to the more traditional route of pop music?
A: I always loved and enjoyed the creativity and raw sounds of bedroom pop. I write all my songs from my bedroom room, so it felt natural to create music of a genre that represents that.
SD: Are there any future virtual concerts fans should keep an eye out for?
A: Totally. Love all the live stuff so far. Will definitely be continuing to perform on Instagram lives and such!
SD: Finally, where can current and future fans find you online?
A: My music is on all major streaming platforms under “AVIV.” My socials are all @itsaviv except for Tiktok, @itsavivv.
Both “Lonely Bitch” and “Frontlawn” are available on all streaming platforms; you can keep up with AVIV on Instagram @itsaviv.
