'I See Blue'- Bears In Trees Review

Written by: Jayme Stewart

Bears In Trees are released their ep I See Blue on August 23rd, and there is a lot of curiosity around it. They have said that it is a bit different from their older music, but different can be a good thing. A lot of people are going to be curious what the new sound is like, and so am I.

The first song is titled Nights Like These. This song has a really good vibe, it carries the vibe of adventure and trying things which is very reflective of how they are trying something new with this ep. The lyrics of this song are really well written, and the song is able to tell a story. This song is a stand out on the ep for me from the topic to the sound, the song is overall really good and something that is easily enjoyed.

The second song is called Life’s A Beach, and within 30 seconds of listening to this song I knew that it was going to be a favorite. The lyrics are so clever, referencing Sylvia Plath was a stand out for me. The sound is something that stands out, it’s something so different from other songs I have heard, and it’s great. This song carries a lot of power, and the flow of it is very catchy. It is so out of the box but it works so well, which is something that doesn't always go so well.

The third track is called Don’t Drink Coffee. The instrumental to this piece right away has a good sound, it gives a bit of a beach-y vibe which is really interesting. This song has sad lyrics and a slightly melancholy delivery but in a way that is still catchy and makes a fun song. This song is on the shorter side, being only a minute and a half long but it is a good listen and I think it adds a lot to the track than it may seem with the length.

The next track is Starting Fires. This song has some piano in the track which I liked a lot. It is something different and made it stand out in a good way from the other songs. The lyrics to this song are really good as well, they fit so well over the track and it makes the song have a really interesting vibe to it. This song is a bit more powerful than some of the others to me, it’s louder and has a few more elements. The sound works really well and it goes to show how versatile they can be.

The last track is I Am Cold. This song is a bit longer, nearly three minutes and forty seconds- and it delivers a lot. The theming of this song is really good, the ties between weather and emotions is really clever and I think a lot of people will like that it is more than just surface level. This song has a really good sound just like the other songs on the ep- it has a pretty chill vibe but still has an impactful delivery especially in the chorus. The song is likely to be a favorite off the album because it does encompass a lot of things that make a song good from good lyrics, references and rhythm to a good track and chorus.

Overall, this is a great ep. It shows a lot of what they can do, which is a really good thing to try and showcase. This ep was definitely a risk since it goes off of the path of music they were on, but the risk was worth it. The ep has five amazing songs that have great emotional lyrics, good tracks, good flow and tell a story. The ep feels right, it makes sense even if it is different from the sound they have had before.

This ep is one that could be enjoyed by a lot of people, and is definitely deserving of recognition and listens. They said that this album is about getting better- and I think it most definitely is. The music feels healing, it’s full of raw emotion and it just hits heavily. This ep is an adventure, one that everyone should listen to and see where it takes them.
