Recently, small bands have been flocking to social media app and video-sharing platform TikTok to promote their music. Artists have gone about this in a variety of ways, especially since the pandemic hit.
Florida's Arrows in Action are one of the bands that use their songs as sounds in hopes that the algorithm will pick it up and get it trending. By doing this, along with covering pop-punk classics, they increase their chances of having their music used by others in their own videos.
Kid Sistr, who released their debut EP in July, also do covers of popular songs and requests that people make in their comment section. Eric Christopher, lead vocalist of Hospital Bracelet, has also utilized the app, talking about social issues and causes that are important to them, while also promoting their own music, including their debut LP which comes out this month.
Blue Deputy, who recently signed to Chillwavve Records, creates more curated content for their audience while also talking about issues that matter to them. They also do some more entertaining, fun videos, hopping onto trends that are popular on the app.
Patrick Gilchrist of Not My Weekend leans more towards the pop-punk community within TikTok, also providing content from the band and promoting their music. This has definitely helped the band see some growth, especially with their first full-length coming out later this month.
All of these bands mentioned, and so many others, are using TikTok to their advantage. Some artists have even gotten themselves signed or have been able to release more music after gaining traction on the app.
Emo artist Røse’s song "Are You Tired?" got released after going viral on the social media platform. She was even featured on Alternative Press and The Noise to promote the single!
Frances Forever, who you may know from the popular song and dance "Space Girl", recently signed to Mom + Pop Records, home to artists and alumni like Ingrid Michaelson, Alina Baraz, Flume, and Beach Bunny. In a world that's constantly changing, and with the future of live music up in the air, it's comforting to know that platforms like TikTok exist, still helping fans to find their new favorite artists and helping labels to find their next big stars.
