Self-proclaimed glitter grunge princess Holander is back with her first release of 2021. The 22-year-old’s new single “E-Girl” is the perfect song for the digital age we’re now living in.
The track begins with a "dum-da-da" vocal melody over a catchy techno beat. The opening lyrics "I'm lost in a video game / All these boys will have to wait" set the scene for the e-girl protagonist who just wants to be left alone.
Holander herself described "E-Girl" as an antisocial anthem. She states that this single is for "outcasts, e-girls, and misfits. People who don't fit in."
The lyrics are effective in creating this visual throughout, especially in the second pre-chorus. Lines like "My drink spilled on my telephone / That's okay, I hate when you call" get the point across entirely to the listener.
Quite possibly my favorite part of the song is the second pre-chorus into the spoken break; "Wait, how's he still calling me?/ These are waterproof?" While it may catch listeners off guard on the first listen, it broke up the typical songwriting formula and brought something unique to the track.
Holander looks at this release as the start of a new chapter, stating, "I chose 'E-Girl' to start the new era because it really encapsulates this new world of music that I refer to as 'Digital Queen.' It has all the angst, heartbreak, empowerment, and independence rolled into one. It centers on being a true individual and finding that to be incredibly difficult and yet so rewarding.”
Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable track and definitely isn't your average indie-pop song. It provides a fresh vibe and catchy lyrics that will keep you coming back for more listens.
"E-Girl" is available to stream everywhere you listen to music. You can follow Holander on Twitter @iamholander and be sure to tweet us what you think about the song @lgndsoftmrw!
