Pop-rock solo project Highwind is back with a rework of their song “2023” just in time for the new year. Frontman Chris Russo collaborated with fellow New Jersey artist Idle Wave to put together a more chilled-out, acoustic version of the original, resulting in a mellow song filled with raw emotion.
Russo’s vocals really shine through on this version, front and center without the electric guitars of the first version alongside it. The softer instrumentals allow the singer’s voice to be heard crisp and clear, putting all of his talent on full display.
The music video that accompanies the new release shows the recording process amidst the current pandemic, with Russo and his crew wearing masks, recording vocals and guitar alongside Idle Wave. The result is a very homely, warm video showing both artists' passions for making music even during such hard times.
In the new reimagined version of the song, the brutally honest and tragic emotions of the song are highlighted extremely well. Throughout the song, Russo conveys the feelings of losing someone extremely close to you to the audience, through lyrics like “So did you know your fate? / Did this fall into place? / There’s not a second chance, / I just lost all my faith,” and the repeated line in the chorus, “Please don’t leave.”
With the world going through such a tragic period of time, this song is what many people may need right now. We can’t wait to see what else Highwind has in store for listeners as the year progresses!
“2023 (Reimagined)” is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can support Highwind by picking up merch, including the new 2023 hoodie, and following them on Twitter @HighwindBandNJ. Let us know what you thought of the new track on Twitter @lgndsoftmrw!
