New Jersey pop-rock duo Highwind, composed of Chris Russo (vocalist) and Dan Smith (drummer), released their latest single “Sugar” on March 10th. The upbeat pop break-up song is the band’s second single for their upcoming album, “Something Right in Between” which is set to release May 6th.
Highwind’s latest single is a reflection of recovering from a relationship where you have only been used, disguised in its upbeat packaging that makes listeners want to get up and dance.
“Sugar” keeps the chorus bouncing with rhythmic high hats and echoing background vocals. These high energy choruses are well balanced with the mellow verses that are carried with sirening guitars.
These opposing qualities work together to keep “Sugar” stuck in listeners’ heads! The song provides listeners with the feeling of nostalgia you thought you could only get from listening to 2013 indie-pop in your headphones while walking through your local mall.
Despite its colorful exterior, lyrics like “Bitter is the taste that falls off your lips. I’m the contrasting sweet. You have desires that I can’t meet. I wonder, am I a favorite, a flavor of the week, or something right in between?” provides insight to the story of a relationship between two juxtaposed individuals that is no longer working.
Highwind manages to take a tale of heartbreak and turn it into a pop anthem of self-empowerment!
