Gloss Explains What It Means to “Play Myself Again” - Review

Written by Nicole Guzman

Philly based all-female indie-pop/R&B group Gloss entered the scene in 2019, inspired to challenge the lack of representation for women in the music industry. Just four months after their first release, “Mariposa”, they have returned with another single in preparation for an EP to be released later this year.

The band is composed of vocalist and keyboardist Sophia Grosshauser, bassist Harlee Torres, drummer Mollie Schecter, and guitarist Corinne Kite-Dean, all coming together to release “Play Myself Again”. This fresh new single channels what the band says is “Liking the idea of someone, but then becoming disappointed when you realize your feelings aren't reciprocated.”

The song opens with simple keys, followed by the gradual introduction of a smooth guitar riff and gentle drums. Sophia Grosshauser delivers profoundly influenced R&B vocals among the instrumentals while slowly building up the intensity of the drums to accompany the increasingly upbeat and energetic lyrics.

This track mainly incorporates R&B and pop influences and utilizes many instrumental breaks that complement the lyrics and vocals. Throughout the chorus, Gloss includes captivating vocal harmonies.

Lyrically, they’re able to capture exactly what emotion they want to get across to you. The lyrical component of “Play Myself Again” portrays a distinct picture of how it truly feels to make things up in your head.

Gloss’ ability to compose a song where each member’s talents get to shine through is just one reason why this release an incredible listen. We can’t wait to see what they do next!

You can listen to “Play Myself Again” and their previous release, “Mariposa”, on most streaming platforms; you can also check out their Bandcamp, and keep up with them on Instagram and Tik Tok!
