Our favorite Tallahassee sad boys Mayday Parade are back with their latest release, the “Out Of Here” EP. It features three new tracks, each different in sound and style, so whichever era you became a fan during, there’s a song for you.
The opening track “First Train” is a sweet, melodious tune with an inspiring message. Every pop-punk kid has wished they could just take the next train out of their hometown, and that is just what lead vocalist Derek Sanders delivers here.
Next, we have “Lighten Up Kid”, the only single and a classic emo anthem featuring insane backing vocals from drummer Jake Bundrick. So far, we can see some common themes developing between these two tracks and it may or may not relate to the title of the release.
The opening lyrics, “Everybody’s got a chance to make it out” are words I feel we all need to hear. Whether you’re in college like me or just trying to make it through high school, it’s important to know you’re not stuck in the same place for the rest of your life.
The closing track proves Mayday Parade can’t make an album or EP without producing tears (in the best possible way). “I Can Only Hope” touches on the waves of emotion one might feel if things between you and your significant other fall apart.
Overall, I hope this release is foreshadowing what’s to come music-wise from the five-piece; it’s still got classic pop-punk vibes, but with a twist that suits them well. Also, I can’t finish this piece without discussing the cover art; it pictures a red umbrella (wonder where we’ve seen that before) floating away...could this also be a clue for what’s to come, potentially saying goodbye to the older Mayday Parade sound?
We don’t know what their plan is yet, but if you want to stay in the loop every step of the way (of course you do), make sure to support them by picking up some merch and following them on Twitter @MaydayParade.
