“Get On My Wave”- Andrew McMahon Review

Written by: Hannah Clough

“Get On My Wave” is the newest single from one of the most versatile artists I know, Andrew McMahon. This song was released on July 31st, 2020 and sounds like it could be setting the mood for an album release at the end of this year or early 2021, since he hasn’t released a record since “Upside Down Flowers” in 2018. For those of you readers who don’t know who Andrew McMahon is, he started out his music career writing, singing and playing piano for a band called “Something Corporate” you may know their song Punk Rock Princess. After he parted ways with SC he joined “Jack’s Mannequin” where he wrote, sang and played piano for some popular tracks like “Dark Blue”, “Holiday From Real” and “Swim”. After leaving JM in 2012, he started writing music for himself under the name “ Andrew McMahon”, then released his first solo EP in 2013 titled “ The Pop Underground”, this EP is still my favorite thing musically he’s ever done it’s amazing. In 2014 he decided to start going by “Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness” and has steadily been releasing albums under that name since then. Now back to his most recent work “Get On My Wave”, this single is catchy, lighthearted and the perfect track to play while driving to the beach, McMahon has said in interviews that the song is about love, alienation and the fact everything is not what you see on the surface meaning there’s always more to the story than what you see or in this case hear. In the song he sings “And wondering about a spaceman” and “And I was just in space, man” paying homage to his old “Something Corporate” and “Jack’s Mannequin” days where the Spaceman theme was used in several tracks such as “Space” from “North” by SC, “La La Lie” from “Everything In Transit” by JM, then continued into his solo career with “Cecilia and the Satellite” from his self titled album and the cover art for his sophomore album “Zombies On Broadway”. If you’ve been sleeping on Andrew McMahon it’s time to wake up! You do not want to miss what he’s doing next because my guess is it’s going to be incredible based on his previous track record. So go ahead and add “ Get On My Wave” to your best summer playlist and enjoy!
