Beach Holiday, the solo project of vocalist Ryan Fears, has just put out a refreshing new track, titled “Buried,” the first song off of his upcoming sophomore album. This is the fourth stand-alone single he has released this year, joining “It’s Sad”, a collaboration with Cold Brew, “fine (stripped)”, and “SEE YOU NEVER”; the single also serves as the follow-up to his first full-length, “eternal summer”, released in June of this year.
It’s evident from the first few seconds of the song that Fears has come a long way since debut single “Anchor” was released around this time last year, in terms of production alone. While the album and previous singles fit into a more emo trap/rap sound, “buried” is very evidently influenced by indie/dream pop fan favorites like LANY and The 1975.
In terms of lyrical content, this song is similar to “SEE YOU NEVER”, chronicling a failed relationship and the aftermath of it. The track has an opening reminiscent of “Robbers” by the aforementioned The 1975, fading into just Fears’ vocals with minimal background noise before the beat kicks in.
Unsurprisingly, the chorus is a highlight and super catchy, something we’ve come to know Beach Holiday for. It’s almost like a burst of energy right after the verses die down, giving you the same feeling as scenes of driving down the highway in a coming-of-age film.
The lyrics on the hook are simplistic and relatable, like “Send me away from the city just to pull me right back to you” and “You wasted all my time saying you want me to want you.” These phrases are straight out of anyone’s brain while grieving a relationship, once again proving Fears’ knack for creating endearing moments lyrically.
Although the production was already praised earlier, it’s definitely worth mentioning again; this is the cleanest that Beach Holiday has ever sounded. Sonically, it’s the most streamlined work in Fears’ discography.
The final chorus is followed by distorted vocals that lead into a mainly instrumental ending, only accompanied by echoed vocals, tying up the track perfectly. If this is any indication of what’s to come for Beach Holiday, we’re definitely excited about it.
