Forgotten Gems Of The Scene: Every Avenue

Written by Megan Langley

I’ve been listening to music in the pop-punk, alternative, and “emo” scene since 2014, and over the course of the past several years, I’ve discovered countless bands within it, some newer and some older. A band I discovered that falls into the latter of those two categories is Every Avenue.

I vividly remember hearing their song “The Story Left Untold” playing through the speakers of my local Hot Topic while I strolled through the store one afternoon in 2016. As cheesy as it sounds, I also remember being so captivated by the song that I wanted to check out more of this band’s material as soon as I got home.

Hailing from Marysville, Michigan, Every Avenue is a five-piece consisting of vocalist/pianist David Ryan Strauchman, lead guitarist Joshua Withenshaw, rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist Jimmie Deeghan, bassist/backing vocalist Matt Black, and drummer Dennis Wilson. The band released a series of EPs in the years following their formation in 2003 before signing to Fearless Records in 2007.

They then released another EP titled “AH!” followed by their debut full-length “Shh...Just Go With It” in early 2008, both via Fearless. These releases preceded their superb sophomore album “Picture Perfect,” which is still my favorite release of theirs to this day.

In the summer of 2011, the band released their third album, “Bad Habits,” a release that showed an edgier side to their sound while still incorporating the pop-punk influences from their previous two LPs. These records led to tours with large acts in the pop-punk scene, including All Time Low, Mayday Parade, The Maine, Hit The Lights, Valencia, Boys Like Girls, and Yellowcard, as well as two appearances on Vans Warped Tour - one in 2008 in support of “Shh, Just Go With It!” and one in 2011 in support of “Bad Habits.”

In 2012, the band announced that they would be going on hiatus, and six years later, they announced their return and played two one-off shows to close out 2018. Halfway through 2019, they made a special guest appearance at their hometown date of Sad Summer Festival in Michigan.

Every Avenue left an impact on the pop-punk and alternative music scene, especially in the 2000s and early 2010s. Over the course of their career, they created a lot of memorable music that we can all look back on and enjoy all these years later.
