Exploring “Bastardized Pop” With Highwind- "Crashing, Burning" Review

Written by Erika Nissen

The term “bastardized pop” has been heavily used recently by New Jersey-based pop-rock act Highwind, and is the best way to describe the sound of their newest single, “Crashing, Burning”. With a heavy bass line, captivating guitar riffs and a verse from Nolan McGovern and Jake Perreault of The Fairview, this is sure to be a fan favorite.

Highwind, the solo project by singer-songwriter Chris Russo Jr., has always been centered around creating music that is brutally honest and has been influenced by genres such as pop-punk, alternative rock and indie pop. Though these characteristics ring true for the new single, Highwind has taken a different direction in comparison to their previous releases, the “How’ve You Been?” EP and stand-alone single “2023”.

“Crashing, Burning” is a track that is full of life and tells a very special story. Mental health has always been a common theme in Highwind’s discography, and this song is no different.

The lyrics create a narrative of someone who is going through hard times and is facing the pressure of having a bunch of eyes watching them, as if they are some kind of spectacle. The main line, “their jaws are dropping as I’m crashing, burning” helps paint this picture very well.

In a world that is always so focused around social media presence, it’s important to remember that what we see on somebody’s Instagram or Twitter page is content that they have curated in a very specific way. Someone’s life may look perfect from the outside, but that is just the narrative that they are painting for everyone else to see.

It’s safe to say that this track will definitely hit home for a lot of listeners, whether they are in the public eye or have simply had an experience before where they felt as though everyone was watching them as they crumbled. Both lyrically and sonically, this is a huge step in the right direction for Highwind.

“Crashing, Burning” is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can support Highwind by following them on Twitter @HighwindBandNJ and picking up some merch.
