Eraste Debuts Melancholic New Single- “Habits” Review

Written By: Nick Garrastegui

2021 has been quite the year for Eraste. The independent artist has released three singles plus her sophomore EP, “Crashing Every Party.” Her newest single, “Habits,” shows a lot of growth in such a short span of time.

The track is a picture-perfect melancholic pop song. From the lyrics to the instrumentals, you get a sense of the subject matter the moment you press play.

Even more impressive is the fact that the song is incredibly catchy while not having a true, traditional style chorus. However, the existing chorus' refrain of "Leaving me like this" allows you to sit and soak everything else in.

Eraste's storytelling through her lyrics is utterly incredible. The opening lines, "I heard someone call your name and I almost turned my head / But I know you'd never be caught dead / In a place like this" immediately grab the listener's attention and serve as a way to introduce the song's subject matter.

The minimal instrumentals throughout the first verse and chorus aid in allowing the song's story to be the focal point of the listener's attention.

The second verse sees the full instrumentals come in, with the arrival of the drums creating a more upbeat atmosphere. Every element of the second verse make it stand out and it immediately became my favorite part of the track on my first listen.

The words, "Our memories discolored / Like a bruise / Endless summers / Violent blues / Like our matching tattoos" stood out to me the most, and continue to be my favorites each time I've listened. The bridge into the final chorus is also gorgeous, combining elements seen earlier in the song while it softly fades into the final refrain of "Don't leave me like this."

For someone so early on in their career, Eraste already has the tell-tale signs of being a phenomenal artist. Between her lyrical prowess and extraordinary vocals, it's easy to imagine the growth she'll soon see in her career.

“Habits” is available to stream everywhere you listen to music, and you can watch the lyric video for it here! You can also follow her on Twitter @_eraste. You can let us know what you think of the new album by tweeting us @lgndsoftmrw!
