As far as debut singles go, it’s pretty rare to find ones that set a solid foundation for a band. Most debuts act as a stepping stone, a way for young bands to find their musical footing.
This is absolutely not the case for Eight Cold Hells. The band hails from Beuamont, CA and say that they are taking on a new outlook for what it means to create.
The main track is accompanied by an intro titled “Mū.” The intro begins with an almost apocalyptic feeling voiceover between stop and go instrumentals.
The instrumental soon becomes frantic while the words "You will know fear / You will be graced by cold / You will feel nothing / You will embrace / Pain" float between distorted guitars. The drums come in towards the end, causing even more musical chaos before flowing flawlessly into the start of "Pale."
Even without listening to "Mū", "Pale" works perfectly as a stand-alone track. Both the instrumental and the vocals come roaring in, wasting no time diving into the opening lyrics "Alone / Shivers sent down my spine as I dwell / Alone / The river overflows and swallows me whole."
One of my favorite things about this song are the lyrics; my favorite lines being "So I'll carve the scripture / til' you can read it on my skin / I've crossed all my paths as it followed me down / Where the fuck do I turn to now?" The lyrical content is typical for the genre, but the delivery is particularly effective in driving the point home.
The most effective description of "Pale" is huge. The song's structure and recording make it sound like an absolute monster that's firing on all cylinders.
The added bonus of "Mū" as an intro pulls you in from the get-go and almost makes it feel like this single is a story. It's something that stands out when you tend to only see intro tracks on albums.
“Pale” is available to stream wherever you listen to music. You can keep up with the band by following them on twitter @EightColdHells and you can watch their music video here! Like the song? You can let us know what you think over on twitter @lgndsoftmrw!
