The debut single “i s o l a t e m e” by Dearest, premiered Friday, January 15th with a lyric video on YouTube! This indie-rock band hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, did not disappoint with this song or the accompanying visual.
If there’s one thing we can all relate to from 2020 it’s the isolation we experienced during our months-long quarantine, preceded by the separation from others we still experience (in most states) due to social distancing requirements. The pandemic exposed a crucial part of the human experience: the necessity of connection to others, and this beautifully written love song explores the possibility of love, connection, and the desire to be with someone while in a pandemic.
Within the first 30 seconds, the soft, melodious tempo of the song draws you in as Dearest, references the pandemic with lyrics like “Stay away from me / Don’t be afraid, we’re all in quarantine.” The rest of the verse includes skillful wordplay using comparisons of being sick with “fevers” and “chills” to the love interest being their cure.
The second verse speaks on the distance and yearning experienced by the two lovers separated due to the pandemic and how this person makes it all worth it. The captivating chorus is a compelling declaration of the desire to be isolated with their lover despite everything.
Besides cleverly written lyrics that use the sentiments fostered by the pandemic in metaphors for love and longing, the visual is just one more reason to listen to this song. Its pace complements the music’s steady tempo with repeated alternating nature shots and shots within a living space.
The video, feeling almost nostalgic due to its classic film appearance, highlights the pandemic’s solitude while also showing the fantasy of the singer and their love interest with whom they can’t be near currently. It’s a simply done but beautifully executed love song made for our current times.
