"Dead End" & "Batshit"- LIGHTS Review

Written by: Dave Tauscher

Canadian pop singer, songwriter, comic book author LIGHTS is back in 2020 with a new single titled ‘Batshit’. This comes 3 years after her last full-length album titled Skin & Earth. ‘Batshit’ is coupled with another track released earlier this month called ‘Dead End’. Both tracks, made in collaboration with hip hop artist MYTH, are to be featured on her upcoming remix album coming next month. Upon first listen, both tracks sound like a typical LIGHTS song, very pop-y, synth-y and have an overall chill relaxing drive in your car kind of vibe. The first of these two tracks has LIGHTS singing over a pop beat with her very distinct atmospheric vocals. She leaves a lot of space for the music to flow and lets you take in the beats and bass MYTH provides. This track is more about the feel of the music more than anything. I could see both tracks being played in the club, both have a lot of remix potential.

The second track ‘Dead End’ is my favorite of the two. I really like the drum beats MYTH has her singing over. She also uses a few different vocal effects to accent her voice. Another thing that stood out to me was during the chorus she’s singing almost as if she is scat singing “dead end” to mimic the drums. It’s a small detail but I feel like it adds something to the song with her singing the part slightly staccato rather than singing it normally. It adds a bit of bite to the track. This is a solid LIGHTS single. While it doesn’t seem as if she is taking any real risks, she is sticking with what makes her great. Fun, bouncy synth-pop songs that you can vibe out and have a great time listening to.
