Following the release of their new single “Would I Still be the Same?”, we got the chance to sit down with Colin Peck of Anyone Anyway. We discussed the band's beginnings, influences, and plans for the rest of this year.
Introduce yourself and your band!
I’m Colin Peck, I play in Anyone Anyway! I’m from Providence, Rhode Island.
Who would you say inspired you to start making music?
I started pretty young. I actually got started with Kiss, which is pretty funny, my dad just went on a nostalgia trip [with them] because that was something he listened to when he was younger. I just heard [them] in the car on the way back from soccer practice and I was like, “What is that? Is that called a guitar solo?”
Since then I started taking lessons and whatnot. Green Day's “American Idiot” made me think "okay, this is actually what I’m going to do for the rest of my life", even though I was ten years old. (laughs)
How would you compare your newest song “Would I Still be the Same?” to the rest of your discography?
It’s a really good snapshot of what Anyone Anyway is about. It has all the elements that you would look for from a song from us. It’s got that big chorus, dynamic stuff, some left turns, and obviously a breakdown.
Would you say that the music you're listening to at the time inspires parts of your songs?
A lot of [what inspires us] is listening to a ton of different stuff. There will be something from a song that makes you go “Woah, it would be cool to do something like that and try to make our own spin on it.”
At the time we were writing “If I Could Unlearn You”, “Would I Still be the Same?”, and “If It Is” we were listening to a lot of classic 2003-2007 post-hardcore and whatnot, but also a lot of pop stuff.
Who were you listening to around the time of writing and recording the single? How did they influence that track?
I actually came up with the chorus for that song by trying to figure out how to play “Aquasun” by Basement. I got completely distracted and just came up with my own thing and was like, “Oh, this is sick… I’m going to run with this.”
What's your dream tour lineup? It could be one you'd play on or just one you'd like to see!
I was actually thinking the other day about Boston Manor. I think they would be a really cool fit for us. Bring Me The Horizon too, that would be so sick. A lineup we have always been talking about is us, Microwave, Underoath, and Taking Back Sunday.
Going with the topic of live-music, what's your favorite show you've been able to play? Why?
I have so many favorites, they all have their own special moments. The first Canadian show was cool.
It was Romancer, Pine, Heavyheart, and Goldfinch. We played a house show in Massachusetts in July of 2019 which was also one of my favorites...even though it was like 100 degrees.
What can we expect to see from Anyone Anyway this year?
Gosh… that’s an excellent question, definitely at least another song. I can promise one song minimum!
There may or may not be other songs we are working on. I’ve only been staring at the wall for the last year, definitely not writing anything new. (laughs)
We do actually have a song that’s done, we’re just working on the rollout for that. It’s been tough this year to be motivated and feel okay enough to do anything.
To close this out, what do you want to say to anyone reading this right now?
I hope you’re doing okay! Straight up, I hope this year has been as kind as it could be to you.
It’s been so tough, so crazy. I hope people are trying to find some way to find peace.
We would like to give a huge thank you to Colin Peck of Anyone for taking the time to chat with us! You can stream "Would I Still be the Same?" along with the rest of their discography anywhere you listen to music.
