The Rochester/Buffalo, New York-based emo-punk band Carpool is celebrating the holiday by releasing a cover of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up The Sun.”
The band breathes new life into this 2002 classic girl-pop anthem. With riffs similar to a classic Third Eye Blind song and angsty punk vocals, they turn this beachy pop hit into something you’d scream your lungs out to at a DIY basement show.
A lot of covers end up sounding like the exact original, just in a different genre. For Carpool’s “Soak Up The Sun,” they completely reworked the track, making it sound like an original song written by the band.
It carries over their spunk, signature vocal style, and overall good energy. When asked about why they chose this particular song, vocalist Stoph Colasanto said this;
"When asked why I chose 'Soak Up The Sun' by Sheryl Crow, I could think of one and only one story as to why. There's a really good Goodwill [store] about ten minutes from my apartment, and I like to try and visit there at least once a month...
As I entered my local Goodwill this August, the overcast of grey had already started its descent upon Rochester, letting us know the sun was on its way out, and the bleak was on its way in. Everyone inside the Goodwill was visibly pissed off...grumpy, moody, and just all around not having it that day...
I can't lie, I wasn't having it either. For some reason, every light in the store was shut off and there was no radio playing throughout the store."
"Soak Up The Sun", as well as Carpool's entire discography, is available to stream wherever you listen to music; you can support the band by picking up a record or cassette via Acrobat Unstable, some merch via the band's official store, and following them on Twitter @CarpoolNY.
