I’ve known of UK-based pop rock band Hot Milk since they released their debut single, “Awful Ever After,” in the beginning of 2019. After hearing that single, I was instantly intrigued by the band’s unique sound and quickly became an avid fan of their music. They started this year off strong with the release of their single “June Gloom” back in February, and a few months later, they’ve followed it up with their latest single, titled “California’s Burning.”
The catchy riffs in the intro immediately showcase the darker side of Hot Milk’s sound, and the upbeat drums and added synths in the second half of that intro make it even more anthemic.
The pop-influenced verses bring an intriguing vocal performance from Han Mee, delivering some catchy melodies right off the bat (something that this band is extremely good at) and prepares the listener for the song’s massive chorus, with a powerful performance from the band’s other vocalist/guitarist, Jim Shaw, who also leads the second verse that follows. The hard hitting drums and bass from Tom Paton and Harry Deller build up the bridge, which contains some screams from both Han and Jim, perfectly expressing the aggression and frustration within the song.
The darker composition and overall aggression found throughout the track showcases a new side of Hot Milk’s sound, and between that and the captivating and powerful performances, Hot Milk have created another impressive single with “California’s Burning.”
