Breaking "The Patterns" With John The Ghost - Review

Written by Sydney Durst

John O’Callaghan, also known as John The Ghost, has released his latest single titled “The Patterns.” The single, which dropped in early February, is the latest release from his debut LP titled “I ONLY WANT TO LIVE ONCE”, which dropped on February 12th.

The album has been described as the voiced desire of wanting to escape, experience freedom, and experience life. “The Patterns” is definitely one of the singles on the album that happens to describe all three within the two and a half minutes it runs.

The song seems to be speaking about breaking away from patterns and the expected. Lyrics like “We can be / Almost anything / That we would like to be” go on to further the message of how breaking away from those patterns can open up the opportunity to change, making a hopeful message that is paired perfectly with the tone of the melody.

Instead of going for upbeat rhythms to create the positive emotion that is normally found in uplifting music, O’Callaghan instead uses almost angelic-like hymns paired with strong percussion and subtle guitar; the mood, as a result, is set up as inspiring and buoyant. “The Patterns” also easily paints the image of driving towards a sunset (or sunrise) in the listeners’ minds.

Personally, I think “The Patterns” only cements the proof that O’Callaghan is capable of releasing good solo music that showcases his talents, without sounding like simply another version of The Maine, which self-admittedly was a concern before I got the chance to listen to the single. Now, after listening, I can see why fans are excited for the official debut of his first LP.

“The Patterns” as well as the full LP can now be listened to on all streaming platforms; to support John The Ghost directly you can purchase his merch and also give him a follow on Twitter @johnmaine! Let us know your own thoughts on “The Patterns” by tweeting at us @lgndsoftmrw!
