Boston Manor have returned with a new label and a new sound. The U.K.-based band recently signed with SharpTone records and have ushered in a new era with their new single “Carbon Mono.”
Boston Manor is an ever evolving band. While 2016’s “Be Nothing” saw them gain success in the pop punk scene, the band has grown and blossomed with a new dirtier and experimental vibe.
Fans of the band began seeing this transition with their sophomore release “Welcome to the Neighborhood” which then exploded with 2020’s “Glue.”
“Carbon Mono” opens with a deep dark voice saying “Desperate times call for desperate pleasures.” The words soon become garbled, accompanied by electronic instruments before fully coming together with raucous guitars and tight drums.
Something about this track that stood out upon my first listen was the guitar tone. No longer does the band utilize the cleaner tone found in most pop punk songs; they have evolved into heavy, snarling guitars that are almost percussive in nature.
It makes the track have an updated grunge feel while adding in electronic elements to make the track feel huge.
The lyrics to the song complement the grizzled instrumental perfectly. They transform an already incredible instrumental into a perfect stadium ready song.
The chorus is easy to remember and catchy, while the verses are aggressive and easy to scream along to. When listening to it, it’s easy to pick out lines that will be fan favorites to scream along with at shows, especially the line “ Do you kiss your mother with that filthy mouth?”
With such an ever evolving sound, the band does a fantastic job of managing to always sound like themselves. As different as this song is, it still very much sounds like Boston Manor. It retains the catchy songwriting they have become known for while still pushing the boundaries of rock and continuing to experiment with their sound.
“Carbon Mono” is available to stream everywhere you listen to music, and you can pick up some merch from the band here! You can also follow the band on twitter @BSTNMNR.
