Arizona natives Birchwood dropped their self-titled EP on October 26th and we’ve been listening to it non-stop since. It may only be five songs in length, but lyrically, it’s an emotional rollercoaster, even down to the cover art; it depicts signs of hope and light with the pink gleam coming from the window of the closed door.
The journey begins with "Blame", a track with a haunting spoken word section paired alongside an uplifting guitar riff. This really set the tone for the release and there isn't a more solid track that could've been used as an opener.
Next, we have the lead single, “Caught Up.” This piece, like the cover art, presents themes of hope and promise as acoustic guitars at the beginning melt into a sweet melody that would dry the tears shed during the last song.
Residing in the middle spot is “Typical.” The highlight here is a killer steady drumbeat that continues throughout the track and takes it to the next level.
Following is our favorite on the EP, “All We Know;” everything about this track is loveable, from the all-too-relatable lyrics to the raw and raspy vocals. The solid guitar riff is fitting for the overall vibe and the instrumental outro was unexpected, but truly a pleasant surprise.
Unfortunately, we’ve come to the end but it’s on the best possible note; "Sink" is the hard-hitting track this EP so desperately needs. It may start off slow, but once the tempo picks up there's no stopping the tears.
