Birchwood Isn't Ghosting Fans With New Single - "Holy Ghost" Review

Written by Hannah Clough

Arizona natives Birchwood have just released their new single “Holy Ghost”, four minutes of angst and heartbreak pieced together with powerful and impactful guitar riffs. The pain in lead vocalist Nay's voice is prominent throughout the track and leaves listeners hurt yet blown away.

The now two-piece Midwest-emo group emulates artists like Movements, which comes as no surprise since they are one of Birchwood's biggest inspirations. Since our interview with Nay back in November, they've added a drummer to the project, and judging by the singles that have come out since, we think he's a great asset.

Birchwood is one of those far and few between bands that can tackle expressing raw emotion through multiple genres while managing to have each release shine on its own, never sounding too similar to another. This ability allows them to stand out and really make a name for themselves; we can only see them going up from here, and it's incredible to watch and be a part of their journey so far.

Although it took a few listens of this new song for everything to fall into place, once the story connected and the lyrics sunk in, everything clicked immediately. Despite never experiencing the emotions expressed in this song myself, listeners will still be able to really feel for the narrator and their struggles.
