On August 25th, the Australian group Between You & Me released their single “Deadbeat” on all streaming platforms. “Deadbeat” follows up their previous 2021 single, “Supervillain.”
The music video for the song premiered on the band’s YouTube channel showing the behind-the-scenes footage of the creation of the song since the pandemic and continuous lockdowns in Australia prevented the band from filming the music video that was originally planned.
Having evolved a huge amount since their 2018 album “Everything Is Temporary,” the group’s growth is shown immensely in their latest singles. “Deadbeat” opens with an acoustic guitar part that is followed by a pulsing bass and hard-hitting drums that lead into a catchy, melodic chorus.
Lyrically, the single discusses feeling inadequate for someone who manages to stick around with lyrics like “I’ll keep you waiting for me and you keep on paying for it” and “I’m just a deadbeat trash heap / I don’t deserve you at all.”
Between You & Me manages to communicate their message with easily digestible and relatable lyrics while still being able to convey a personal experience as shown in lyrics like “Got me feeling kinda slow / Like the notes I used to post / To your nana’s home.”
The high energy of the song persists until the bridge of the single slows things down with finger snaps and a chugging guitar riff as the lyrics “I’m just a deadbeat trash heap” repeat. Just when you think you know where the direction of the song is headed, the song takes a heavier turn as the end of the song’s lyrics are screamed by frontman Jake Wilson.
A part of the song that I found was especially enjoyable included the electric guitar towards the end of songs that accompanies and blends seamlessly with a choir of “oohs.”
